| BUSHKILL FALLS Bushkill, PA |

| by Marilyn& Kathleen Cahill | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Dad (Gilbert) wanted to stop at Bushkill Falls when we go to Hershey Park, but heard that it was absolutely not wheelchair-accessible in any way. This was confirmed when I emailed management there. So, Kathleen and I decided to take a spontaneous day trip out there while Victoria was in school, since it is less than an hour away. |

| There are four trails, marked by different colors. ALL of them involve many, many steep, narrow steps up and down rock cliffs (see picture below). However, we checked out the shortest, easiest trail (the green one) twice, first from the point of view of a wheelchair. Not possible at all, trust me. Then, after we had tried the other trails, we still had a little time left, so we decided to go over the green trail again to see if it would be possible to carry Victoria. (She does not yet weigh 40 lbs., even though she is eight years old!) We decided that it would indeed be possible, especially since there would be three of us who could shift off, and Victoria can ride piggy-back, holding her arms around our necks. This would enable her to get to the first lookout where you can see the main falls. You might be able to do it if you have a lightweight child and a very lightweight wheelchair and at least two people to help. With admission prices at $9 adult and $4 for children 10 and under, you have to decide in advance if it's worth it to try. Bathrooms, gift shop, History of Bushkill Falls pavilion, and ice cream parlor are not accessible. You could get a wheelchair in if it's not too heavy and you don't mind lifting, but it won't be easy. Parking lots are gravel, hilly, and there are a couple of faded "handicapped" parking spots near the ticket booth. There is a nice picnic area with tables which are outside the paid admission section. Despite roots and ground, yoiu could get a wheelchair into that area as well. There is a small lake with paddleboats for rent. We didn't try that, and I don't know what rules and regulations they might have about disabled people going in them. I guess we'll find out next time. There is also a mini-golf course. We didn't try that either. So, we plan to try the green trail with Victoria if it is a nice day on our way to Hershey Park. Check back in a few weeks; we'll let you know how it went.* |

| *Actually, it didn't. We went the other direction because we wanted to visit Gilbert's niece in the hospital in Allentown. We'll try Bushkill another time. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| P.S. The falls are beautiful in their own right, and we enjoyed contemplating the fact that all of this is God's handiwork! Observing nature always reminds me that if He can create such intricate variety, both minute and majestic, how perfect must be His ways in the details of our lives. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
